Eden of Gender

Inspired by the preferential treatment of boys and the suppression of girls in East Asian families, Eden of Gender exposes these cultural constructs while inviting reflection on the complexity of identity. The work encourages liberation from stereotypes, likening individual growth to plants thriving in fertile soil, unbound and free to flourish.
This installation critically examines gender identity and social stereotypes, focusing on the binary gender constructs deeply embedded in East Asian cultures and their influence on individual development. A grass-covered surface serves as the foundation, with an inverted grid fence lying flat above it, symbolizing the collapse of rigid societal norms. Evoking the imagery of the "Garden of Eden," this arrangement critiques the idealized cultural constructs of purity and harmony while highlighting the embedded gender roles and prejudices within these ideals.
