Eden of Gender interrogates how binary gender norms shape self-perception and development, reframing identity as a living, shifting ecology rather than a fixed category.
Eden of Gender examines the cultural production of gender within East Asian contexts, where inherited expectations and domestic pedagogy often naturalize hierarchy and constraint. The installation stages a “garden” as both promise and critique: a site associated with purity, origin, and harmony, yet structured by exclusionary ideals. An inverted grid—collapsed from its upright function—signals the destabilization of normative frameworks, while organic elements propose identity as growth: contingent, relational, and resistant to rigid classification. Working through symbolic arrangement and abstraction, the piece invites viewers to consider how social stereotypes are internalized, how they delimit imagination, and how they might be unlearned. Rather than offering a single narrative, the work creates space for ambiguity, exploring what forms of freedom become possible when gender is understood as fluid, cultivated, and continually evolving.
